Maine Permit Test Practice

Maine's Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), part of the Secretary of State, issues learner's permits once you pass a written exam and vision screening. Teens under 18 need a driver education certificate before they apply, and Maine asks more of new drivers than most states: 70 hours of supervised practice, 10 of them at night, before a license.

The written test is drawn from the Maine Motorist Handbook and Study Guide and covers rules of the road, signs, impaired driving and sharing the road with everyone from logging trucks to moose. Winter driving and wildlife questions are fair game. Before you head to a BMV branch, you can practice free on DMV Permit Prep and see which topics still trip you up.
